i think no other album ends in such a way like this... in my view this song is like a suicide note from the person singing, complete hopeless... and then that big sound near the end is when he... kills himself, but then theres that noise that perpetuates until the end of the song that (in my interpretation) means that after he died he didnt free himself of all the hurt and sadness

I mostly interpreted it as him reflecting on his own mental state and how nothing would really change after he commits suicide in the title track. the hatred is still consuming him inside, he ended his life as his last attempt of getting away from himself, and no matter what he would say or do, he would still be that horrible maniac he were.

both cash's and trent's versions are good in their own ways for their own reasons. cash's is more wistfully melancholic and introspective, while trent's feels more hopeless and like a climax of emotions boiling over. all the people here hating on cash's version are silly, he brought a unique spin to the table that was great. (i still like this version more tho)

Much, much better than the Cash cover. Trent's music nails the actual feeling of hopelessness much better to me.

the blow to the back of the head near the end is absolutely insane, the way that metallic rumble just gets frozen in time for a bit until it cuts out and leaves that grainy dusty loop to end the album is just audio porn, not to mention depressing - its like nothing changed after he did the deed, if that's the interpretation anyway. im so glad this album went stratospheric, it's almost like an act of god (ironically)

i'm not sure how you can make a song that *sounds* like something bleeding out and dying as it continues, but here we are

@JJ_Joshua - Because the lyrics are brilliant and country music is a lot more mainstream than industrial rock, not to mention Johnny Cash's status as a music legend. I agree though, NIN's version is way superior.

My interpretation is that in the "narrative" of the album, the protagonist didn't really kill himself, it was a dream or a fantasy, and he finds himself afterwards, still alive, everything as fucked as it was before, realizing his misery and letting go of it.
