A lot of times, when people say “they don't make music like this anymore”, the phrase is hyperbole. What they mean is modern music doesn't give them the same kind of feelings that older music gives them, which is usually just because they haven’t formed the same kinds of mental and emotional associations with new music that they have with the music of (usually) their adolesence. However, in the case of Paul’s Boutique, that statement is literally true. The costs of clearing all the samples on this album would be astronomical (particularly after Grand Upright Music, Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc. changed how samples were cleared – for much the worse, I would argue). As it was, they spent around $250,000. ¶ In any case, this album is a masterpiece. I don’t listen it as often as I once did, but I still find I know almost every word (except for a few that I’ve never been able to decipher).

It's fun to read peoples' new discovery of this album. A classmate and I would recite this entire album in 9th grade study hall, in 1990. I'm 41 now and still listen to it occasionally and it is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Rap has sort of passed me by (I was the suburban white kid listening to LL, RUN-DMC, Beasties, Eric B & Rakim, etc.) but this album seems a part of me. My only regret is that I never was able to see them perform live.

Along with Endtroducing and Fear of a Black Planet this album represents the high point of sampling as an art form. Absolutely flawless.

v That's because this album didn't really have any hit singles and didn't sell well, but it's still weird

I asked P-nut what his favorite Beasties album was and he said "Paul's Boutique, it changed my life." Now THAT is a fucking endorsement!

AB-SO-LUTELY their best album! Then Check your head. Then Ill Communication. Then Licensed to Ill. Then Hello Nasty. After that, I sorta stopped listening... [2] Same happened to me.
